Debnevo Village

What to see

Attractions of Debnevo

From the ancient fortress and the stone bridge to the church and the river — the places that make Debnevo unforgettable.

The Stone Bridge (1904)

The Stone Bridge (1904)

The Stone Bridge was built in 1904 by master builder Filip Raykov — one of the apprentices of the legendary Kolyu Ficheto. The bridge spans the Vidima River in the very heart of the village and remains its most recognisable symbol to this day.

The elegant stone arcade of five vaults — 82.5 m long and 6.5 m wide — is a fine example of the craftsmanship of Bulgarian master builders from the early 20th century. The bridge is also a favourite spot for photographs, especially in the evening, when the light tints the stone in warm honey tones.

The Kaleto Fortress

The Kaleto Fortress

The Kaleto fortress lies near the centre of the village and once defended the Troyan Pass from attacks. It is a significant multi-layered archaeological site.

Excavations (including in 2019–2020) uncovered finds whose earliest traces date back to the 5th millennium BC (the Chalcolithic, or Copper-Stone Age), as well as Byzantine coins, jewellery and remains of dwellings and garrison structures.

St. Petka Church (1892)

St. Petka Church (1892)

St. Petka Church was built in 1892 to a design by the Tryavna master Pavel Kolev, with iconography by Vasil Genkov and woodcarving by hieromonk Meletiy. In its yard stands a monument to the village heroes who fell in the Wars of National Unification.

In 2026 the church was renovated — the result of the strength of a united community and an example of the people of Debnevo's care for the village's spiritual heritage.

Prosveta – 1905 Community Centre

Prosveta – 1905 Community Centre

The Prosveta – 1905 community centre (chitalishte) has been the spiritual and cultural hub of Debnevo for over a century. Founded in 1905, it is among the oldest community centres in the Troyan region and the driving force behind the festivals, exhibitions and preserved local memory.

A children's dance ensemble and a singing group work here, while the library holds over 10,000 volumes. The centre organises the children's festival on 1 June, the Nikolay Petev recital competition and many other events that keep the bond between generations alive.

The Laka Locality

The Laka Locality

“Laka” is a favourite summer spot for the people of Debnevo — a flat meadow by the Vidima River, suited for a beach and bathing. The clean mountain water and greenery make it a natural resort for locals and guests alike.

The level terrain by the river also offers conditions for hang-gliding, and the spacious meadows are a gathering place for local celebrations.
