Debnevo Village

About the village

Debnevo — by the Vidima River, at the foot of the Balkan

One of the largest villages in Troyan Municipality, with a rich history from antiquity to the present day and a living bond between tradition and modern life.

History

Debnevo is a settlement with deep historical roots. Right beside the village rises the Kaleto fortress — a late antique and medieval stronghold that defended the Troyan Pass from attacks. Archaeological excavations have uncovered finds whose earliest traces date back to the 5th millennium BC (the Chalcolithic), as well as Byzantine coins and jewellery.

Over the centuries the village grew up along the Vidima River, becoming a lively mountain hub. A testament to the skill of the local master builders is the stone bridge from 1904, built by master Filip Raykov — an apprentice of the legendary Kolyu Ficheto.

Debnevo's spiritual centre is St. Petka Church from 1892, and the village also keeps a museum collection with finds from Kaleto and collections gathered by Peyo and Marin Dulevi.

Debnevo is a living village to this day: here work the Prosveta – 1905 community centre — founded more than a century ago — the Ivan Vazovprimary school with an educational tradition since 1881, and a kindergarten, which keep the village's cultural and educational tradition alive.
